2ND PLACE DSA 2006
SPRING LYRIC CONTEST

Judges Comments

Although there were several songs with deep, philosophical ideas and intense lyrics, they did not seem "singable" but more poetic.  I'D RATHER BE, with an easy rhythm, sets up the picture of someone daydreaming at the desk of a better place - fishing on the lake. The nice, gentle motion like the rocking of a boat gives you the feeling you're out there fishing too!   Leaves you with a smile, especially in this hot weather.

I'D RATHER BE

Bumper to bumper
Hottest day of summer
Orange barrels on both sides

Yet it's not too far

To the reservoir

Open water with blue skies.

       CHORUS: I'd rather be boating
                         I'd rather be fishing
I'd rather be out there now
                         Than sitting here wishing.
                          I'd rather be somewhere
                          Where the day doesn't care
If a few hours are missing.
                          I'd rather be floating free.

Weekday to weekday
Slowest hours of my pay

Caught behind a desk

Yet it's not too soon

To hum a different tune

A tackle box and ice chest.

Bridge:  One day you'll see
             My plan won't be
             Just another day dream
             A someday scheme
It's the place I'll always be.

       CHORUS: I'd rather be boating
                         I'd rather be fishing
I'd rather be out there now
                         Than sitting here wishing.
                          I'd rather be somewhere
                          Where the day doesn't care
If a few hours are missing.
                          I'd rather be floating free.
