1ST PLACE DSA 2006
SPRING LYRIC CONTEST

Judges Comments

Not only does is the song well written, with a good structure, easy rhyme, and a rhythm that begs to be sung, the images are evocative for any parent.  Rather than a story song per se, it is actually a snapshot in time.  Nice use of a pre-chorus as well as a tag line that ties it up neatly.

Weeds in the Sandbox (Rust on the Swing)

Gazing through the kitchen window

She stepped back to yesterday

Joined her children in the backyard

where she used to watch them play.

The magic of sweet memories

Swept away the mist of time

Like scenes from old home movies,

Pictures flashed across her mind.

PRE CHORUS: For a few precious moments

She heard them laugh and sing,

                           Building castles in the sandbox

And flying high on the swing.

CHORUS:

But now there's weeds in the sandbox, rust on the swing.

Bittersweet reminders how time changes things.

Tiny castles washed away with the years of rain

Leaving weeds in the sandbox...and rust on the swing.

She heard "ring around the rosey"

Nursery rhymes out of the past.
She shed a tear and wondered

How those years flew by so fast.

Back at her kitchen window

She was feeling joy and pain

And wishing with an aching heart

She could live those years again.

PRE CHORUS: For a few precious moments

She heard them laugh and sing,

                           Building castles in the sandbox

And flying high on the swing.

CHORUS:

But now there's weeds in the sandbox, rust on the swing.

Bittersweet reminders how time changes things.

Tiny castles washed away with the years of rain

Leaving weeds in the sandbox...and rust on the swing.

Oh...she wishes with an aching heart

She could live those years again.
