With thousands of Baby Boomers turning 60
every day since January 2006, this evocative song will become more and
more relevant. With conversational tones, everyday words, and a simple
story, the writer takes us to a place that no longer exists except in
memory, but we can see the sign, smell the fish frying, and hear the
music across the water. Excellent story song. |

The Dancing Fish Café
She was the first of the Boomers born to parents of the war Too young for failin’ memory, but it’s going more and more. We’re losin’ to the bad days, but today she’s at her best. She’s done her hair and makeup and put on a cocktail dress. Tonight she want to ride our boat on out to River Town And she lightly lifts her hem and sort of sashays down. She says, “We’ll have some Margaritas and the sea food buffet And cut a rug till sunup at The Dancing Fish Café.
Chorus: No one’s been to The Dancing Fish Café Since the day they backed up the lake. It’s still out there in old River Town Underwater, ‘bout sixty feet down – A fish danced on a big neon sign Standing upright and hooked on a line The smell of fried cornmeal thick in the air.. Somehow I’m going to take her back there.
The stillness of the lake reflects the fullness of the moon, So real it seems as if we’ll be collidin’ with it soon. She’s smilin’ as the warm wind strokes her salt and pepper hair. We pass the railroad trestle, and we both know we are near. With the engine off and music on, and the big moon up above I thank the Lord for one more day with the woman that I love. And I’m not sure she understands, but I know she doesn’t care ‘Cause we just hold each other tight and dance together there.
Chorus, repeat chorus
