Musical comedy doesn’t translate on the page, but on
the stage. Obviously, there will be men singing the first two lines of
each chorus, and a woman answering in the last two. In this kind of
risqué comedy, such double entendres as “the south will rise again” and
“I could recover just for you” bring titters from the audience. The
phrase “you can tell by the way they squealed” is a forced rhyme, which
breaks the flow a bit, when a near-rhyme would work just as well. That
said, I think I’d enjoy this geriatric farce once it’s done. |

What You’ve Got (for a musical comedy) Genell Kelso, Dallas TX
For lots of years the growing boys ignored the growing girls. For all they knew about life and love, we’d just as well’ve been squirrels, Until one season, when their hormone rockets suddenly fired. Their intellectual level left a lot to be desired!
CHORUS: “Look what I’ve got! Look what it can do! - - So, now I’m all excited! Aren’t you excited too? “I see what you’ve got – I see what it can do— Don’t know if I’m excited, since to me it’s all so new.”
The boys grew into young men, who bragged of their conquests, playing the field. They claimed all girls were crazy for them; you could tell by the way they squealed! Each single girl tried to find herself just one single man worth keeping - - Hoping he would be true to her, and come home to do his sleeping.
CHORUS: “Look what I’ve got! Look what it can do! - - It’s so great it should be shared! Much too good for only you!” “I see what you’ve got – Would you like to keep it too? Does the name Lorena make my meaning clear to you?”
The former studs around our town by now have aged into old men. They spend their days just wishing that the south would rise again. They say such silly drivel to the women they’ve admired. Their intellectual level leaves a lot to be desired!
CHORUS: “Look what I’ve got! But I don’t know what it can do! - - If you talk real sweet, it could recover just for you.” “I see what you’ve got – But I don’t care what it can do— I’ll be just as happy if that part of life is through.”
“I see what you’ve got – But I don’t care what it can do— I’ll be just as happy if that part of life is through.”
